Before the Throne

Discussion Questions:

1. Read Ephesians 1:19–20. Paul says the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work toward those who believe.  How does knowing that kind of power is behind God’s authority shape the way you think about prayer? Do you tend to approach prayer more like a last resort or a first response and what does that reveal about how powerful you actually believe God is?

2. Read Ephesians 1:21. Jesus is described as being far above every rule, authority, and power both now and forever. What voices, systems, or pressures in your life compete with Jesus for authority over your decisions? Where do you find yourself trusting human power, influence, or control more than Christ’s kingship?

3. Read Ephesians 1:22–23. Paul says Jesus was given authority for the sake of the Church, not for personal gain. How does it challenge your view of leadership or authority to realize Jesus' rules for your good? Where do you struggle to believe that God’s rule over your life is actually beneficial and not restrictive?

4. Read Matthew 6:9–10. Jesus teaches us to begin prayer by honoring God’s name and kingdom. In what ways has our culture (even Christian culture) made God feel too casual or familiar? How do you balance intimacy with God while still holding a deep reverence for who He is?

5. Read Matthew 6:10. Praying “Your will be done” requires surrender. What’s one area of your life where surrendering to God’s will feels especially difficult right now? What fears come up when you think about truly deferring your desires to God as King?

6. Read Hebrews 4:14–16. Hebrews says Jesus sympathizes with our weakness and invites us to approach His throne with confidence. Why do you think people sometimes feel intimidated or hesitant to bring real struggles to God? How does knowing that Jesus understands your humanity change the way you approach Him in prayer?

7. Read Hebrews 4:16. We’re invited to approach the throne of grace boldly, not fearfully.

What would change in your prayer life if you truly believed the King welcomes you, listens to you, and acts on your behalf? When you pray this week, what would it look like to approach God with both reverence and confidence?
