1 John 3:1-10
Discussion Questions:
1. What have you been getting out of your reading through 1,2,3 John so far? Is there anything that has stood out in your life that needs to be dealt with? Discuss as a group what has stood out through the readings.
2. Read 1 John 3:1-3 together. Discuss this passage together as a group. What is this passage saying particularly about God’s love for us? Discuss as a group the greatness of God’s love. After unpacking the passage, talk as a group about the ways you’ve seen God’s love for you in your own life? Have each person share 2-3 ways that they’ve seen God’s love for them in their own life.
3. Being a child of God means giving something up. Re-read 1 John 3:1 together. When you’re a child of God you become unrecognizable to the world because that previous part of your flesh has died. Talk as a group about some of the ways that your life should look different than the world. Is it difficult for you to live a life that is “unrecognizable” to the world? If so, why is that? What changes might need to happen in your life?
4. Read 1 John 3:4-10 together. What is it saying particularly about sin? Discuss this passage together.
Now answer this question: Do you ever try to tell yourself that a certain sin in your life is acceptable? If so, why are you accepting of that sin in your life and what needs to happen for you to flee from it?
5. Re-read 1 John 3:4-6 together. Use these verses in the group as practice for evangelism. Reaching others for Christ and giving the Gospel is the calling that is placed on the lives of believers. Talk as a group about the recent evangelism opportunities that you’ve had. Have you shared the Gospel with anyone recently? Talk as a group about how you could share these 3 verses to talk to give someone the Gospel?
6. Re-read 1 John 3:7-10 together. Discuss the difference between believers and non-believers. Talk about what distinguishing characteristics and patterns should be lived out in the life of a believer and why living those things out are important for our witness to others.
