Second Mile

1. Read Matthew 5:38-42 together as a group. Unpack this Scripture together. What stands out in this passage of Scripture as you read through it?

2. Talk about retaliation as a group. Why in our flesh do we want so badly to get people back for what they said or done to us? In what ways does Jesus call us to respond?

3. In verse 41, Jesus says to go not 1 mile but 2 miles. The first mile was required by the law and the second was an act of love. What are practical ways for you to live a life where you constantly go the second mile?

4. Let’s reflect on this series so far. Read Matthew 5:1-42 together as a group. If you applied these first 42 verses of the sermon on the mount to your lives what would begin to look different?

5. Let’s talk testimony. What has been the most helpful in your walk with God from the sermon on the mount? How have you seen yourself grow as we’ve studied through the first 42 verses? Also, what have you found to be the most difficult to live out of the things we’ve studied?

Challenge : Write “I will go the second mile” somewhere where you’ll be reminded of it daily. Every time you see that pray that God would help you go the second mile in your relationships with people that day!
